Images triggering quiet, secret feelings - that is what my photography is about. When I see these little happenings in nature I am reminded that I am not alone in feeling sorrow, aloneness, or pure and unbridled joy. I am able to call forth these images when I need them and know that the world does not revolve around me and that I am just part of the great network.
My father, Joe was a photographer, chemist, and lover of nature. He began working for Kodak in 1930 and was head of the Film Testing Division at the end of his career. He taught me about light, color, framing, and he taught me how to see. I was a dark room assistant for my Dad for many years. I believed he was a magician.
Beginning at age seven, the latest trend in Kodak cameras passed through my hands - Brownies, Instamatics... My first SLR was given to me by my Dad when I was 42. My beloved John gave me my first macro lens when I was 59. I moved to digital in 2003. In the process I have moved from 'snapshot', to the 'pretty picture', and now to these 'secret sightings'.
I am intrigued with transitions in nature, especially in plants as they begin to mature and morph into other forms. At the moment that we discard them as no longer aesthetically pleasing, they are often, on closer look, most beautiful. Their evanescent beauty and elegance seems a fitting metaphor for reflection, vulnerability, and quiet dignity - qualities too often neglected in our hectic world.
